Leading with Purpose: Reflections from the Responsible Leadership Conference 2025

How can leadership create real change, not only inside companies but also for society and the planet?

This question shaped many discussions at this year’s Responsible Leadership Conference in Frankfurt, where leaders, innovators and changemakers came together to explore what responsibility looks like in business today.

A Different Starting Point

What became clear throughout the event was how many organizations are currently transforming their structures, business models and cultures in order to become more sustainable. Listening to these journeys was inspiring, and at the same time made something very visible about traceless®.

We are not transforming toward sustainability. We were founded on it.

This foundation shapes every part of who we are - from our material innovation to the way we collaborate, make decisions and grow as a team. It is also reflected in the people who join us. Just this year, more than 65 new tracies became part of our team because they genuinely want to contribute to a meaningful mission. That is what responsible leadership looks like to us: it starts with who you bring on board and why.

This foundation also made a special moment at the conference even more meaningful: traceless® was honoured with the Circularity Champion Award 2025 in the Cradle to Cradle category. The recognition links directly to our origins. Before founding traceless®, our Co-Founder Dr. Anne Lamp coordinated the regional activities of Cradle to Cradle NGO in Hamburg for many years, teaching circular design and material cycles. Today, those principles shape our work at industrial scale.

To dive deeper into what responsible leadership means at traceless®, our Head of People & Culture, Patric, reflected on the conference and answered a few questions.

Many companies today are in the middle of their sustainability transformation. For traceless®, sustainability has been part of the foundation since day one. How does that influence your view on leadership?

Patric: ''At traceless®, sustainability isn’t something we’re transforming towards; it’s the foundation we’ve been building on from the very beginning. This foundation shapes how we think, lead, and act every day.

For me, it’s about embracing a truly holistic mindset: whether in business or in life, inclusion, diversity, appreciation, and empowerment are the most sustainable forms of interaction and the most stable pathways to collective success.

That’s why leadership at traceless® isn’t defined by hierarchy or transformation, but by attitude. It’s a mindset that guides every decision we make grounded in responsibility, driven by purpose, and centered on people.''

When you think about responsible leadership, what comes to mind first and how would you describe it in the context of traceless®?

Patric: ''For me, leadership is first and foremost about enabling and empowering living systems; helping them grow autonomously and thrive in ways that inspire and nourish others.

At its core, responsible leadership is a selfless act of service - towards people, towards our environment, towards something larger than ourselves. It’s not about control or recognition but about creating conditions for others to unfold their potential.

At traceless®, this mindset is deeply embedded in how we lead and collaborate. We see leadership as enabling impact, not by feeding the ego, but by strengthening the ecosystem around us.''

Leadership here is closely connected to purpose. How do you make sure the traceless values show up in the way people work together and grow as a team?

Patric: ''One of the core leadership principles at traceles®s is “Create Meaning.” It’s not just a phrase; it’s a mindset that shapes how we attract, hire, and onboard new talent, and how we grow together as a team.

From the very first touchpoint, people are invited to become part of something meaningful, to contribute to a purpose that extends beyond individual roles. Over time, this creates a natural cycle: our values aren’t just communicated; they’re lived, internalized, and embedded into our cultural DNA.

That’s how purpose becomes not just what we do, but how we work together every day.''

This year, traceless® has grown significantly, welcoming over 65 new team members. What do you focus on to ensure the company culture scales along with the team?

Patric: ''For a startup, achieving more than 115% growth within a single year is an incredible milestone and one that was only possible thanks to the dedication and spirit of every single tracie. It truly takes a collective effort to make such a transformation happen.

Most of our growth is happening in Operations as we prepare for full-scale, continuous production. Of course, with growth come challenges and this is exactly where a sustainable leadership culture becomes essential.

At traceless®, we see our organizational culture as a living system; one that evolves, adapts, and grows alongside our people. Our focus is on nurturing this system with awareness, trust, and shared purpose, so that our culture doesn’t just scale - it matures.''

traceless® works with flat hierarchies and a high level of individual responsibility. How does that approach shape the way we collaborate day to day?

Patric: ''No single person can hold all the answers to the questions of the future, but a truly collaborative organization can.

At traceless®, we trust in the intrinsic motivation of our experts. When people understand the deeper purpose behind their contribution, they naturally take ownership and seek solutions proactively. This trust-based autonomy allows us to collaborate far more effectively than any top-down instruction ever could. It empowers every team member to act with responsibility, curiosity, and initiative - which, in the end, is what drives real innovation and progress.''

The term “self-leadership” comes up quite often internally. How do you define it, and what role does it play in how we work?

Patric: ''I often like to explain self-leadership with a simple analogy: imagine a driver on the road. With a driver’s license, she has the knowledge and capability to navigate complex traffic conditions; making quick, independent decisions without needing constant instruction. No one questions her ability to steer responsibly within that system.

It’s the same at traceless®. Every employee has earned their “license” through their expertise, experience, and sense of accountability. They’re in the driver’s seat of their own role - navigating projects, making informed decisions, and collaborating with others along the way.

That’s what self-leadership means to us: trusting people to drive with competence and purpose, rather than monitoring every turn they take.''

During the Responsible Leadership Conference, many discussions circled around the idea of responsible growth. What does that mean to you personally and for traceless® as a growing company?

Patric: ''I have deep respect for all the organizations that have embarked on, or are already far along in, their transformation journeys. Redesigning an existing system to become more sustainable is an incredibly complex and demanding process - one that deserves recognition.

While listening to their stories at the conference, one thought kept coming to mind: how fortunate we are at traceless to have been built on a sustainable foundation from day one.''

''For us, growth isn’t about transformation; it’s about staying true to a deeply rooted mindset. Our “responsible growth” lies in scaling our impact without compromising our principles. Sustainability isn’t a goal we’re working toward - it’s the very ground we’re growing from.''

Looking back at the conference, what were your main takeaways or reflections that you’d like to bring back into our work?

Patric: ''What struck me most was how experts from so many different industries looked at traceless; almost like a beacon. For many of them, we represent what they aspire to achieve: running truly sustainable businesses while navigating the complex intersections between sustainability and diversity, sustainability and investment, and sustainability as a broader social responsibility.

Hearing this perspective was incredibly powerful. It reminded me how far ahead traceless already is - not only technologically, but also in how we live our values every day. That realization fills me with pride and gives me new energy to keep pushing forward, because our progress inspires others to start their own journeys toward a sustainable future.''

Finally, if you could give one piece of advice to leaders or future leaders who want to create positive impact in their organizations, what would it be?

Patric: ''It’s not really my style to give advice; as you know, I deeply believe in the power of self-leadership within systems. 😉

But looking back on my own journey as a leader, two things have always guided me: curiosity and an unwavering belief in the good in people.

If you nurture both - the curiosity to keep learning and the trust that people want to contribute to something meaningful - positive impact will naturally follow.''

The Responsible Leadership Conference reminded us that sustainability and leadership belong together. Companies play a crucial role in shaping the future, and we need more pioneers who make sustainability an integral part of how they lead, not just what they produce.

At traceless®, we continue shaping this path, through our materials and through the way we build our organization from the inside out.
